Rhinoceros horns can be legally sold again in South Africa. Rhino farmers wanted to legalize sale of horns and other parts of farm-raised rhinos. The courts upheld the decision to legalize domestic sales of rhino parts in the hopes it will reduce poaching by making a legal source for the parts. The law banning sales was passed in South Africa in 2009, in other countries in 1977. The government will appeal to keep the old restrictions. Sales of rhinoceros horns are a hodge-podge of laws, different in various states or countries. Carved horns are still advertised and sold at US auctions, but sometimes can’t be delivered out of state.
