Hello,
I have five Flow Blue – Progress plates, approximately 6 3/4″ across. I have sent you pictures of one of the five that has the most readable trademark. I also have a close up of the part of the backside that has a tiny, gold mark (checkmark?), as well as a number and an indented brand without color. None of the plate has any chips on the front, some do on the back. There is some crackling on the front of one or two.
On the picture I sent of plate one, it has an 18 on the back. Three of the other plates have the number 8, and one plate have what looks like a 24, the 2 is precise, but the second digit resembles a 4, I think.
What would you date these items? What does the gold mark mean? What do the numbers mean? What is the approximate value of this plate?
Thank you for your consideration.
Janine
Sorry,, the initials and or numbers and the gold check are decorators marks !! Likely the indentations are from the kiln !! They are of no importance !!~ These factories had many decorators who applied the colors before the plates were fired They were paid according to the number completed !! The gold was probably the last color applied so checked as ready to fire !! The manufacturers each had different systems !! You may want to read up on it !!

I looked up the sold listings on Ebay to see what people were actually paying !! The above sold but not for the amount listed !! It was a “”best offer accepted” !! I think your bread plates are from 1894/5 if I remember correctly !!
Martha,
Thank you so very much. I am currently on board. I had been trying to do the research myself, and once somebody mentioned the proper name of the gold check, but I forgot and could not locate the website again. As for the numbers and indentations, it makes perfect sense now.
Much appreciation to you.
Take care,
~Janine
