The history of illustrated sheet music goes back to the fifteenth century, when music was often hand-decorated with elaborate colored letters. Today’s collectors want sheet music published after the 1820s that has interesting graphics. Most of the lithographed vignettes and covers were printed on the East Coast. Many early published songs had been composed in England, but by the 1830s sheet music of American tunes with typically American illustrations was produced.
