The oldest chairs date to 5,000 years ago in Ancient Egypt as ceremonial furniture for kings and queens. Chairs became commonplace in the 16th century. Charles Darwin is credited with attaching wheels to his chair so he could roll around his office more freely, thus creating the modern-day office chair.
