Dear Lee,
The weather was perfect this weekend, so I went to a large Ohio flea market that has been in business for over 30 years. Attendance was good and dealers told me that collectors are still buying. So are those with new houses to decorate. Extraordinary pottery, glass, toys and furniture of all styles and periods are selling near old-time highs.
Furniture was best—Mission, refinished and white-painted pieces were selling quickly. Large Victorian pieces also were moving. Shabby chic is out.
Jewelry was also in great demand. Lots of dealers were offering everything from Victorian gold and Danish silver to Bakelite and unmarked bling. Prices were low compared to department and jewelry store prices. Linens, sewing tools and buttons were also selling, proof that more people are taking up crafts and sewing projects.
Pressed glass was doing OK, but Depression glass and cut glass were slow sellers. Biggest surprise: Several dealers told me they finally sold sets of dark green glassware that had not interested collectors at previous shows this year. Is green the favorite color of eco-friendly decorators?
