Poster marking “the day the music died” sets world record price. You would think the Beatles would hold the record for the most expensive concert poster ever sold. They did, briefly. Their 1966 Shea Stadium concert poster from their final U.S. tour sold for $275,000 in April 2022 at Heritage Auctions. Yet later in 2022 another poster rocked that record. A 1959 Winter Dance Party concert featuring Buddy Holly, the Big Bopper and Ritchie Valens sold for $447,000, also at Heritage. Holly and the other stars were heading to this show when their plane crashed. All were killed, an event immortalized in Don McLean’s 1972 hit “American Pie” as “the day the music died.” This poster marking that day is a remarkably vivid and poignant piece of rock history.
