Strapless Gown

The first strapless evening gown was designed in 1934 by Mainbocher (Main Rousseau Bocher, 1890-1976), an American couturier working in Paris. The black satin dress was said to be inspired by John Singer Sargent’s 1884 full-length painting, “Portrait of Madame X.”
