Great-Grandmother’s Plate

Q: Can you tell me anything about this plate? It has “Crown Ducal Ware” over the word England on the back. It originally belonged to my great-grandmother.

A: The name Crown Ducal was used on porcelain made by A.G. Richardson & Co. of Tunstall and Cobridge, England. The company was founded in 1915 and operated in Tunstall until 1942 and in Cobridge from 1933 to 1974. This mark was introduced c.1925. Charlotte Rhead worked at the factory in the 1930s and early 1940s. She designed several art deco patterns that were so popular the company needed the added production of the Britannia Pottery in Cobridge. The Tunstall factory closed when Rhead left the company. A.G. Richardson was bought by Enoch Wedgwood in 1974.
