Hill Pottery

Q: This platter and serving dish were my grandmother’s. They are marked “Hill Pottery, Rustic, B & L.” I’d appreciate any information you can give me about them and how much they may be worth now.

A: This mark was used by Burgess & Leigh, which made earthenware at Hill Pottery from about 1867 to 1889. “Rustic” is the name of the pattern, which has a brown, blue, or green transferware design. The mark “Rd. No. 56790” is the English mark that indicates the design was registered in 1886. Value of your grandmother’s platter, $200 to $225; serving dish, $150.
