Q: I think my turquoise ceramic clown clock was made by Red Wing Pottery in Red Wing, Minnesota, but it does not have a Red Wing mark. Can you tell me how much it’s worth?

A: In 1947 Charles Murphy, design director at Red Wing Pottery, and George Jurgesen, the owner of a General Motors dealership in Red Wing, formed a company called Mursen (which combined both of their names) to make clocks. The firm operated for only a year. It made five different figural clocks, all designed by Murphy: Polo Player, Chef, Mammy, Gretel and Tik Tok the Clown, the one you own. It is worth $250 to $450.

Letters from readers help us keep track of the changing world of antiques and collectibles. We wish we could answer all questions individually, but that just isn’t possible. We do read every letter, but only a limited number of questions of general interest are answered. Values given are average for the type of antique, not a specific appraisal. No questions about coins, stamps, books or oil paintings, please. Send written questions to P.O. Box 22200, Beachwood, OH 44122.
