The table does have similar features – the carvings around the edges, the grapes and leaves, and the “flower” pieces. They are not an exact match. From what I’ve been seeing online I would guess these to date around 1890 like you said.
My husband purchased this set years ago and that’s about all I know other than what I’m finding online.
I would date this from about 1860 to 1880 but no way to be sure !! Many cabinetmakers continued using the older style joinery into early 1900 !! The lock has been replaced at some point but that should not hurt the value too much !! Is the carving on the chair crest consistent with the buffet and china cabinet !! Often they would not be identical but just have the same elements !!
Remember France and Germany are side by side so it is not unusual to find the same elements in furniture !! Looking at the dining table and chairs,,they are more in line with what you find in France !! Not unusual to find items from both countries in the same set !! How did you come to own this ??
You will not see labels on furniture except occasionally and those will be 20th century !! Your set is typical of German/Bavarian black forest furniture with the carvings of the North Wind face and fruit I see !! Occasionally the female figure is used but not as common as the North Wind face !!
Can you take a pic of the dovetails on the drawer sides or what ever joinery they used ?? May help to date it !! Also any hardware such as pulls, locks ect !! Doesn`t have to be all hardware just a sampling !!
Thank you it is a beautiful and unique set. He paid $8,000 for the entire set. I am trying to do a little research myself to see if it is worth an appraisal. It is much harder than I thought it would be.
