Can anyone tell me about this hurricane lamp (age, materials, artist, if it’s oil converted to electric)? It may be hand painted and I was told it was very rare because it is hand painted and signed. They said it could be well over $1K if from famous artist. Any help much appreciated.

Ha !! Now I can see how that image came about !! Glad to help in a small way !! Next time just post the item here before buying it !! Sometimes sellers give misinformation because they just do not know,, and there are other times that they intentionally deceive those new to antiques and collectibles !! By posting the items here others can read and hopefully learn a bit and others can add their ideas and opinions !! If anything comes up that you need other info or opinions I can help with that !! Nice to see you are interested in the old items !!

You’re right, it does look like a peace symbol. Lol. Thanks for all of your input. I was beginning to wonder if people put their signatures on their belongings as well. I just thought that since it was in the same color as the little girl drawing that maybe it was in fact the artist. But when I put a magnifying glass up to The little girl drawing to look for brushstrokes, I did not see any which is how I came to the same conclusion that you did that it was probably a decal or something that was popular back then as well. Thanks for all of your help! Since I’ve just been a collector for myself personally, I don’t know all of the details of my pieces and am at the mercy of The internet for information or what others tell me. That is why I turn to this website, to see if I could find any other help. You’ve been a great wealth of information. I’m sure I will be posting other questions here of pieces from my collection as I start to list them. Would love to send them to you directly to see if you know any info about them, because this is been very time-consuming trying to research everything. I still have about four more boxes in the attic to go through. LOL. I’ve attached a picture of my light that Was casting the reflection of a peace symbol so you could see what it was making that reflection…haha.

OK,, so that explains that symbol !! Very odd that it looked exactly like the 1960`s peace symbol and since the lamp is from the same era you can see why I asked about it !! There is no artist by that name that I could find !! And if there was, the name would be very close to the artwork on the outside,, not hidden inside !! Name recognition is how an artist makes money so they want people to see the signature !!
Most likely the name is someone who owned the lamp before you !! That was not uncommon back then to have your name on your posessions !!
The movie “Gone with he Wind” was made in 1939 and subsequent re-playing of the movie on TV marked the interest in this style lamp even though they have been made and used for 100 years or more !! Keep in mind that in that time we only had 4 or 5 TV channels so a feature movie was a big deal back then !!
Another odd thing about the era was that little girl pics were a popular art form !! Have yet to figure that out !!

You can look through a few of these to see what I mean !!
So,, back to your lamp,, I doubt that it ever was an oil lamp although it probably did have a chimney !! The chimney was usually the first thing broken on these !! Most used a low wattage small bulb !! It was made mid century,,late 40`s to 1960`s !! If you look on ebay you will find hundreds of different styles !! All lamps are basically made by three mfrs,,one would be the glass,,the second would be the base which is a foundry product and third are the electrical components !! Most distributors just assemble the parts, and add their own labels !!
Hope I have not totally confused you !! And it really ticks me off that someone who is supposed to know lamps and lighting has so little knowledge about the subject !! Such as the person at the Q&A !!

So I guess the question now is who is the signature by? I haven’t found anything about the signature on the inside of the globe.
