I have another object which I am hoping someone can tell me more about. This little vase has a removable centre piece but I don;t know if it’s for flowers or food of some sort. There are also no marks anywhere. I’d love to know its origins and a rough price.

In hope.

Hi again. The lid clips tightly onto the frame but the glass ‘jar’ sits loosely inside. The lid is hinged. It is 13.5″ high and at its widest (the lid) it is 9″ in diameter.

Does the lid fit down on the glass or does the metal frame keep it raised a bit ?? It is quite nice,, !!
Also look on the bottom of the glass and see if there is a seam or possibly a pontil mark that would indicate if it was molded or blown glass !!

Ah, the so called good old days. Well parts of them were a hell of a lot better than now, and others, best left to history.

Could I bother you with one more mystery. Being from Dutch parents (both my wife and I) we could resist this object even though we didn’t really know what it might be for. It could be a cookie jar but it doesn’t seal out air or moisture. It could be a candle lantern but there is no evidence of soot on the inside of the lid.

The ‘canister’ is glass, hand painted on the outside and the framework and lid are brass, all quite heavy and good quality. It measures 34cm (13″-14″) high and around 22cm (8.5″ wide) . We paid $100 (AUS) for it and were told it could well be a bargain because they had never seen anything like it before, it’s obviously old, and it’s obviously quality work. There are no makers marks except for the number 4697 on the inside of each windmill….so, if you’ve seen one before or similar, I would so love to know more.

Much appreciated.

I was born in 1949 and well into the 50`s I can remember the coffee klaches and coffee cake that the housewives served !! Not many women worked back then !! It was a much simpler time in history !! Smoking was “as I said” a social event !! You sipped your coffee,, ate the coffee cake,,and enjoyed a cigarette !!

Of course. I never thought of an ashtray – you just don;t see them around anymore even though I did smoke for a long time. Thank you.
