What is the approx. height ?? It appears to be a stand for a guest registry/book !! Pen and guest book on top !! Wish they hadn`t painted it !! During the Victorian Era and late 19th and early 20th century revival it was common for guests to “sign in” when visiting !! Calling cards were also used !! That would be my opinion !!
Does it look like there was a door on the shelf section at any time ?? That could have been for gloves ect !!
