Yes,, these stoves burned a solid fuel type so would need to be controlled by a damper !! This regulates the heat and keeps the fuel from burning too hot and fast !! More air=faster/hotter burn !! Fireplaces and wood burning cook stoves have a damper for the same reason !!
I think you would be correct giving that era !! 1940`s or early 50`s would be my guess !!
