Just purchased a group figurine on a footed base. Figures consist of woman playing piano, man standing playing violin, whippet dog under piano, and a candle holder. The only marks on the base are the numbers 1649 and 2 under that number. Was told it was a Dresden entitled The recital. The seller said he purchased it years ago from a woman who got it from her mother l. How do I tell if it is a Dresden and era of make?

There is no such thing as “a Dresden”. Dresden city housed not a single producer but many decoration studios, each and every one of which marked their (re)decorated wares. Claimed “Dresden” items without the Dresden-typical floral decoration or at least a Dresden-located studio/decorator marking should always trigger red warning lights.

While it could be Dresden porcelain without a mark,, no way to know !! There were at least 40 studios in the Dresden area that could use the name !! But without a name or identifying mark I would doubt it !! Dresden porcelain is a style and not a brand name !!
