I bought an item that looks something like a serving dish for something. I have had it for about 4 years and no one can figure out what it was used for. On the bottom is stamped “T.H&S” and 8701 and “EP” . If you could tell me what it is and year and value I would so appreciate it. Also there is a metal ledge on the inside on one end. Thank You! Jackie

Hi! I’m the friend who is nuts over Victorian items!

You have a Victorian spoon warmer! Very collectible!

The Victorians believed if you used cold spoons or ladles that you would cool food down too quickly thus the invention of the spoon warmer. Hot water was put in the container (traditionally silver) and service spoons/ladles were submerged in them until they were used. (Remember homes/buildings were harder to heat and it showed status to have food served hot!)

Just search “silver spoon warmer” and you will see quite a few. You will also see that they hold value well depending on condition and rarity of pieces as well as who made them!
