Hello there,

I have a very old antique oil painting that has been passed down throughout the years. Its a portrait of my great(x5)grandmother.. Not sure how old it is.. I`m guessing 5 generations back its got to be late 1700s? There is no visible signatures… it is a large portrait.. I suppose it would be referred a half length portrait. She is wearing a pearl brooch and we still have that very brooch as well. I know we will have to get it professionally looked at but I`m wondering if I can get some kind of insight regarding history of portraits in the UK, Like what kind of people could afford to have one done and where the signature could possibly be hiding.. also if there is no signature at all would that devalue it? What kind of artist did these portraits? where their a select few or where there tons of self proclaimed artists running around the UK? Any information is very much appreciated. Thanks for your time and wisdom!
