Hello.

I am trying to find out anything about the Gettysburg Furniture Company. I have saved a curio cabinet from certain demise and it is most likely worthless due to the extreme damage it has suffered but I am attempting a restore due to its sentimental value. Therefore the value of the cabinet is secondary to any of the historical information I can gain.

The cabinet had a paper label on the back of it which stated that it was made by the Gettysburg Furniture Company Manufacturers: Gettysburg, Penn’a.

The Pattern No. (clearly reads as)656 the finish looks to read c4e. There is an order no. which looks like it reads 2816 and the date is blank. It is difficult to read these markings because they are written in pencil and heavily faded.

The cabinet has been damaged by the elements and the legs have been “sawed” off. It was my grandmother’s though, and I want to try to save it. I am especially interested in the Pattern Number and if this company is still in business, etc. I’d also like to know about the finish as it will be much easier to strip if I know what I am dealing with.

I can attach pictures if needed.

Many thanks to any and all who might be able to help.

The Furniture co opened in 1902 and closed in 1960. Google Wikipedia and it gives it’s history. There is more websites that even show some pictures. Most of their furniture was oak, very little mahogany, Most of the oak was plyboard then a thin layer of veneer oak. So make sure before stripping, you should be able to see the thin layer versus solid oak. Good luck!
