How does one tell the difference between a repro and the real McCoy. I got this from a farm in VT, I was told it was late 19th cent. Any feedback would be appreciated.

Excellent !! I would have been skeptical under other circumstances !! This one looks totally correct with proper aging and patina of the metal and follows the form of others of the same period !! Here are some past sale results at auction !! The only beaver weathervane that I saw recently was a carved wooden one so that price would not be typical of yours !! You also have the directional and that helps !! Yours looks like copper and has the correct verdigris for the age !! My advice would be to contact a good auction house for a proper valuation !! These can sell for several thousand or as you will see from the link a few hundred !! No way I can place a value without a hands on look !! Please come back and update this post when you have it properly appraised !! Would love to know the results !!
One more thing,,looking at how this is made,,could possibly be earlier than 1890`s !!

I own a property preservation company, We maintain foreclosed properties for a number of different banks. This particular weathervave came out of a barn that was part of a clean out. The property was built in the 1890’s and located in central VT. So I didn’t “Hear” about it, nor did I buy it. I pulled a number of high value pieces from this property, Yamaha Clavinova Baby grand piano, snow mobiles, and a lot of art work. The property is listed for 1.5million on Zillow so I thought I should probably get this piece looked at.

Can you get a little better light and take a closer shot of the metal ?? Also a pic of the center section of the N,S arm so we can see how it was made !! With the price of these lately there are many fakes on the market !! I say fakes as opposed to reproductions because you can usually tell the repro`s pretty quickly !! You say you bought it from a farm,, what did you pay for it ?? Who told you it was late 19th century,,and how did you find out about this being for sale !! Answers are important,, not trying to be nosey !!
