Hello, I am new to this site.
I found what looks like a souvenir in my grampa’s closet in Massachusetts. It is shaped like a little drum maybe 3×3 inches. It has some kind of textured covering that is a red tartan pattern. The top of the drum comes off, it looks well made for a souvenir. There are small holes, one in the center of both the top (the cap) and the bottom of the drum. The inside of the cap has some old ink handwriting that says ‘From the Fair of the Sailors’ and ‘Boston November 21st 1864’. Looking closer at the item, I see that around the rim of the cap, there is the word ‘Caledonia’ and on the drum is the word ‘Gordon’. Both of these words look like stamps or something similar as the letters are not perfectly aligned.
The only thing that I’ve been able to find out is that there was a Sailors Fair in Boston during that time period, but other than that I have no idea what this is. The bottom of the drum looks like it may have been attached to something.
I’m not even really trying to price it, I’m just wondering a little more about it. What was it? Was Caledonia Gordon the name of a company? I haven’t found much information online.
