I would really appreciate help in identifying this item: Iron hand forged steer head.

It is very heavy solid iron and measures about 6 inches long and 6 inches from edge to edge of the horns. I know my mother had it for at least 75+ years. I suspect it may be a door stop, but would like to confirm that and also find out if it has any value.

Thank you!

The pic is blurry so can`t see detail,, what does the back look like ?? Its cast iron, not forged I think !! May be a foundry name on back !!

Thank you! This is the first bit of information I have been able to obtain anywhere. I thought it looked hand forged because it is irregular.

It is very difficult to see, but there IS something on the back! It looks like handwritten printed letters that are very difficult to see even when slightly magnified. It may be a name, because the last part looks like it may be Mckenzie.

I would add a photo of the back but because it is so difficult to see, I am quite sure that my camera would not capture a decent image.

Thank you for shedding a bit of light on the subject. Now I have a bit more information and maybe I can learn more about it.

Update. I have been told that this is not a steer head but a buffalo head. Does that help to identify it?

Any information is appreciated. Thanks!

Did you ever make out the name on the back for sure ?? Did not find anything for buffalo head or skull !! I am thinking this may have been attached to something else and just used for a doorstop which was common in past days !! Can you take a pic of the back side ??
Try wiping over the name with a chalk stick and see if you can tell what the name is !! If you do not have chalk dampen the back slightly and use flour to bring out the letters. Both can be washed off !!
