If its really from that time period I think its valuable, however I think you have to know the painters and their style of painting, hence my earlier question about this.

I will take your word on hairline cracks cause i know damage makes a huge deal in fields I am more familiar with. HOwever on this really old stuff I am not so sure. I have seen stoneware go for hundreds of dollars with minor chips and such, they seem to take that in stride in that field. This is why I did not bid on the piece in question the hairline crack had me concerned.

What about like this Aldo Ciolli stuff:

would a small piece missing like say a broken finger cut the value in half??

thanks again.

Are you looking at asking prices or sold prices !! Post the link that you found to those prices !! Anything with a crack unless historically important is less than half the retail value and that is for high end items !! For dinnerware or more ordinary items its just whatever you can get !!

https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_nkw=Swansea+pottery&_sacat=0&rt=nc&LH_Sold=1&LH_Complete=1

Here are the recent sold items from Ebay !! This is what people are actually paying for this pottery !!

look at the prices for plates here:

https://anthemionauction.com/journal/nantgarw-and-swansea-porcelain/

these are the high end hand painted plates; the stuff in that link you sent is mostly transferware. Some of the handpainted stuff that you linked did get over a 100 but how knows if the people were just getting rid of it; or they didnt know what they had or it’s not that great. I dont know.

the plates in this link would be about $600 before the british pound went south after brexit etc.

Comparable plates from early 19th cent by Swansea have gone $300-500; I guess I should have offered them something. It has a hairline crack that is almost invisible in the photos. How much do you think the crack would diminish the value of this? any guess?

Just use comparable items from approx same time period !! That can be established by the mark !! For dinnerware exact dates are rarely possible because they may have made that pattern for several years,, and if it sold well may have repeated it,, so just a general guideline is fine !!
There are no individual artists on this type dinnerware ,, all was produced same as today,, with machines and transfers !! Your little floral is transfer ware,, same as using a decal !!

thanks Martha, I figured out swansea from another site that shows the actual trident with the prongs facing like that. It was at an estate sale and I let it go. How does one evaluate the value of something like that? Do you have to know the artists who painted it and such? or is it enough to cmopare it to comparable items from the same manufacturer? thanks for your efforts!
