It is glazed inside. The way that the lid is made, and fits, doesn’t really allow for something perishable to be put inside and sealed. The powdered sugar won’t work because the words aren’t embossed. It is bugging the you know what out of my wife and I. We have googled every possible combination of words we can, and looked through a lot of images in order to figure it out. I don’t think it is old, so it has to be “right in front of us” but we can’t figure it out. I will post if we figure it out.
If it was glazed and fired inside ( mine is) a bomb couldn`t scratch it !! That is surely a possibility if you live in that area !! My 60+ eyes can`t make it out either !! But here is something you can try,, dust powdered sugar over that mark then dampen your finger and tap the top of the letters to remove the sugar !! Just from the top,,,see if the outline of the letters with the white behind it stand out better !! Let me know what you find out !!
I think you’re correct. Trademark would probably be on the lid and underside. Makers mark just on bottom. I wish the words were just a little clearer. Maybe then my 50 something year old eyes could read it. Cheese spread or butter is very possible because I don’t live that far from what we call “the cheddar curtain” – Wisconsin State line. One problem with the spread idea; not a single utensil mark inside. Don’t know about you, but I would be getting every last scoop out! I’m not giving up yet. I’ll check back to see if anybody comes up with an answer. And I’ll come back if I figure it out. Maybe a trip to the “Cheese Castle” just over the state line is in order for further research! Thanks again.
I think that is a company trademark not a makers mark for the container !! These would have been ordered by the company made to their specifications !! I would bet it was a container for a cheese spread or other condiment !! I have a similar size earthenware container that I use for a sugar container !! Mine had a cheese spread but does not have the bear !!
