Factory of Scheibe-Alsbach, Thuringia, East Germany (GDR). Designed by Helmut Schober (the imprinted writing on this figure is bad). Made between 1949 and 1989. Title “Ausfahrt” (‘Going for a drive’).
As with most GDR-period items one can see that both mold and decoration detail are behind pre-war standards. Not only had many former experts died in the war, education of new mold processors and decorators was neglected for over twenty years. This period then seamlessly continued into the next bad phase when oil and other items required (pigments, etc.) for production & decoration had to be imported by the GDR which at that time had no strong foreign currency at hand.
Resources were cut back dramatically, leaving many factories with what they could come up with on their own. Results were items like this one: near the pre-war original, but far less detailed and “badly” (relative, compared to previous work) decorated. This is one reason for the great price differences achieved at auctions as collectors know if items are from “good” and “bad” periods, bidding accordingly.
I believe it is Schuber !! The Made in GDR indicates it was made in East Germany sometime after 1949 !! I am not familiar with the maker but we have an expert on German Porcelain here !! Maybe he will pop in and take a look !! It would be helpful if you put German Porcelain in the title so he will see it !!
