Need some help from some more knowledgeable people. I was at an auction this morning and I thought I was bidding on a large crock, turns out I was mistaken and I ended up with this instead. I was pretty disgusted with myself at first but after doing some research I think I might have done ok. Based on my limited research I have found it is made by Spode in England and is their tower pattern. It is stamped with a U over 95 on the bottom which I have found indicated it was made in June of 1895. Since they started that method of dating in 1870 and went through 1957 it seems to me it can only be 1895. So any more information on it would be awesome. History, corroborating my thoughts on the date, what type of piece is it (I’m just calling it a bowl with lid), and also ideas on value. It has one or two small chips on the edge but overall seems quite nice for the age.
The pictures aren’t the best (my new phone with a nice camera is supposed to arrive later today) but hopefully they’re good enough to get a good idea.
June of 1895 would be correct !! Nice covered vegetable dish !! Best I can figure its value would be about $95.!! Where did you buy this one ?? Some listings call this a tureen but it isn`t !! A tureen would always come with a ladle and an indented place in the lid for the handle !! If it didn`t it would usually have an under plate !!
