I received this really lovely bowl as a gift but have been unsuccessful in figuring out what it is. It is approx 11.25 inches wide by approx 2.75-3 inches tall. No identifying stamp. Have been searching everywhere on the web and in books and the best I can come up with is imari. Would like to know if I should put this in a case or if it is just useful for holding potpourri.

To say that something is Imari is a bit misleading ! I prefer to say Imari style !! And yes,, your bowl is in that style !! Many of the potteries around Arita ( I think that is the town name) developed a style of art work for the items made for export to the west !! These items were not normally used in Japan,,!! As the style developed they were shipped to the other countries from the Imari port !! As time went on anything done in this style became known as Imari !! Some items were marked by the factories and some were not,, just depended on who made it They would have to have something to indicate country of origin per the McKinley tariff act so yours would probably have had a stick on label !! Your bowl is transfer ware and I am guessing made somewhere around mid century or after !! Yours is a very nice example of Imari style !! No real way to know what the value would be !! As you can see from the link prices are all over the board !! Not all are actually worth what they are asking but you just never know what the buying public will pay !!
PS,,,Don`t put potpourri in it !!
