MATTE AND CRAWL GLAZED POTTERY PITCHER

Another awesome find – this is an absolutely fantastic and appears to be a hand made MODERNIST pottery pitcher. This beauty measures 13″ high from the base to the tip of the spout, about 7″ across (including handle) and approximately 5.75″ in diameter. The body of the pitcher is a white clay with a dark charcoal grey matt slip with a dove gray ‘crawl slip’ over the top which created this amazing textural pattern. The handle and the area surrounding it is covered in a solid dove gray glaze while the interior of the pitcher has a high gloss white glaze.

The pitcher is of substantial weight and almost to heavy to lift with one hand when filled with water. It is in excellent condition, with no chips, cracks or damage. Like so many of the treasures I discover, it has no markings. Any information about this pitcher and it’s age or time frame would be greatly appreciated.

I have tried looking it up as modern or mid-century. I didn’t try sponge ware as it is a textured glaze. Similar to the German Lava glaze. Perhaps I should look in that direction. Here is a photo of the bottom however – in case it yields a clue I may have missed or don’t recognize.
