Hi All,

I have been trying in vain to identify a piece of Clementson stone ware acquired at a church rummage sale. The piece is marked “J. Clementson, Stone ware, Hanley”, not Clementson Bros. Despite my best efforts, I have been able to learn little and am hoping you might share some insight or point me in another direction.

I believe this to be a covered vegetable or vegetable tureen (I have seen it described both ways). I can’t find any example of the shape style although I don’t believe it is either the New York shape or the Prairie shape. It is not the Wheat motif, but instead has leaves and what appear to be berries. It has a large, grooved lemon shape finial on the lid. See detail in photos.

Thank you so much for any help you can give me. I am usually very good at sniffing out research, but this particular piece has me stumped (and frustrated!).

There is very little about this pottery !! Yours would be an earlier mark probably 1839 !! They did use the J. Clementson mark on later pieces but it had the pattern name !! I would just call this a covered vegetable server !! A tureen would have had a ladle and a notch in the top for the handle !! I have not found any others similar to this one !! Most are transfer ware that can be found,, this is more like a cream ware from what I can see !!
