I have five Wedgwood blue onion plates, 9″ across.

I have consulted my handy Kovels’ New Dictionary of Marks and still can’t figure out when they date from. I’m thinking either 1871 or 1897 based on the Z in the mark, but I really would like some assistance.

Then, of course, if I can get a date, I’d like some help valuing them.
Thanks!

I just created a new thread called “Dating Wedgwood Plate – Asian Theme?” with my photos on photobucket

If you would start another thread for your Wedgwood piece I will take a look at the mark !! Just put the pics on photobucket.com or any of the photo sharing sites (not facebook) with a pic of the mark and link to the pics !! This site is not set up for that size photos !! I will look for your new thread !!

I have a Wedgwood plate that I could use some help dating. The plate shows very intricate floral patterns around the perimeter and an Asian scene as part of the central image. There are a couple of figures that appear to be Japanese to me. There is also a lake with some boats and a small town/city that has been highlighted in yellow in the background. The marks on the back of this plate are many. There is a 3 line mark in blue showing: “Wedgwood ~ Etruria England ~ Made in England” There is an impressed mark that reads “Made in England” above another string of impressed letters that I cannot decipher. There is the common impressed 3 part code – the first character is the month of manufacture and looks like a 3 (for March) – the middle symbol is the workman’s mark and looks like an M – the last character(s) are the year, and since this looks like a “Z” to me, it would mean either 1871 or 1897. Then, there is a mark that looks like the number 8 in a dotted like style. Next, there is a handwritten mark (above the glaze) in a reddish brown color that looks like “A4682, 19” to me. Finally, another stray blue mark (under glaze) that looks like either an M or a W.

Can anyone help me to decipher the markings on the back of this piece? I would really like to accurately represent the age when I go to sell it.

Thanks in advance

Note: all of my photos are about 4 Mb in size. I think those are probably too large to upload and I don’t know how to “shrink” them…..

Like I said,, it ain`t easy dating this stuff !! LOL Just do what I do when I can`t be reasonably sure !! Add question marks after the approx. date !! Most that are on ebay regularly will know that means you are not sure !! I always write in the description that I have made every effort to get a correct date but I am not an expert on the Wedgwood dating system !!
Most people understand plain language !! What they do not like is dishonesty or saying something that is incorrect as a selling point !! So just tell the truth and it will be fine !!

Thanks, Martha.

You ended up exactly where I did on the dating. Just don’t want to steer anybody wrong when I list it for sale.
