Our grandfather purchased a set of Mr. Harper’s chromolithograph
reprints of the Kurz & Allison series of Civil War Battles back in 1976
in Little Rock Arkansas. He has since passed away and handed them down
to us. We have a total of 29 of the full size reprints (18.5″X24.5″). Since then, I have tried to find their worth, and most “enthusiasts” have chalked them
up to “just reprints,” and have said they are of no real value. We
couldn’t accept that, as we know how special these are. The following text is from Tias.com website, which has a few of Harper’s reprints for sale, “Harper traveled tirelessly across the country to gather and secure the printing rights to Kurz war views. He commissioned Stratmore Paper Company to create a special quality, high rag content paper to match as nearly as possible that of the original prints. Harper then commissioned precise lithographic engravings and personally oversaw the painstaking recreation of each scene.” They were printed to celebrate the centennial of the Civil War, and he couldn’t afford to bind them into books as he originally planned. I believe they are worth more than the typical reprints. How much are these worth? Individually or as a set of 29?
