I need help identifying an item. It has many marks on it. I did some research on the markings.
It appears to be some sort of oil lamp. It is about 3 inches.
Here’s what I know –
British Sterling
Stokes & Ireland
made in Chester, England around 1924
See image. Please help if you can. If anyone knows the approx. worth -that would also be wonderful.

Hi Jimmy,
I don’t know whether you will see this reply after so long, but here’s my take on your sterling silver item.
Before I go any further, I just want to say that I’m an Aussie longtime collector of solid silver. I don’t specialise in any particular period, country nor genre. If it is solid silver with a finess from 800 to 958, then I’m interested.
So, I believe your item is a small table cigar/cigarette lighter. They came in many shapes and forms, one of the most common being an “Alladin” lamp style of which I have an example. These lighters were commonly placed on tables and left alight for guests to light their cigars and cigarettes, usually after dinner.
They are very collectable and I have not seen one such as yours before. It would be rare but is of a very simple form. If it is assayed in Chester as you have indicated, this would increase it’s desirability somewhat.
Hope this helps.
Cheers,
Steve
