In a box of misc antiques I found an image of a baby on a very fragile piece of fabric. It apparently had been in a frame for years – the sepia color has faded leaving the edges darker – and there is a water stain on one side. It is on very fine cotton, almost a silk feel. The dress has faded so much I can’t make out any details.
I have a similar image, studio photo, dated 1906, and I have the christening dress & socks the baby was wearing. This one appears to be about the same style/time period, infant propped in a big wicker chair, but I can’t find any information on when, or if, photographers did this. The fabric has been cut to fit into an 8×10 ” oval frame. I know image transfer is popular today but this appears to be a very old item. Is there any way to estimate the date? Thanks so much!
They have been transfering photos to fabric since late 1800`s !! Some were even hand colored !! If you could post pics of front and back please !!
Some today can take a very old photo and transfer it to aged fabric then by the use of tea stains, ect can create one very hard to tell from the originals from 1900 !!
Putting them in antique frames finishes the look !!
