Newcomb College Pottery Reflects Nature

Newcomb vase, decorated by Julia Michel Hoerner, 1910, matte glaze with hanging Beale’s barberry and two hidden fairies with billowing hair in blue and green underglaze, marked with Newcomb cipher, potter’s mark for Joseph Meyer, decorator’s mark, registration number “DR80,” and “K” for white clay body, 12 1/4 in. h. by 4 1/2 in. w., $10,625.

Newcomb pottery features designs picturing the plants and flowers found in southern Louisiana. It was made at H. Sophie Newcomb Memorial College, or Newcomb Memorial College, the coordinate women’s college at Tulane University, from 1865 into the early 1940s.
