Meissen sugar box and cover, c.1725–1730, painted figures in gardens at various pursuits with birds, insects, shrubbery, meandering gilt bands around shoulder and foot, cover with concentric enamel and gilt bands, squat octagonal form. Marked on bottom with “K.P.M.” over crossed swords in blue underglaze and “85” in gilt, marked on bottom of cover with gilt crossed swords and “85,” 4 1/2 in. w., $31,500.

An incredible collection of rare 18th-century Meissen porcelain brought $15 million, seven times its pre-sale estimate, at a fall Sotheby’s auction in New York.
