Heywood-Wakefield Mid-century Desk and Chair

Q:  I grew up with this desk and chair in my bedroom. I know by the label that it’s by Heywood-Wakefield. Can you tell me anything about it and its value?

A:  You grew up with a charming piece of Mid-Century furniture crafted by a furniture maker that is very much in demand by fans of the genre. In 1897, two prominent furniture companies, Heywood Brothers (est. 1826) and Wakefield Company (est. 1855), merged to create Heywood Brothers & Wakefield Company; the name would be shortened to Heywood-Wakefield in 1921. The new company rose to popularity in the 1930s, ’40s, and ’50s with its solid wood, Art Deco-inspired Mid-Century furniture. Furniture manufacturing in the U.S. changed greatly in the 1970s, with competition from cheaper overseas manufacturing practically killing business here. Heywood-Wakefield fell victim to the increased competition, closing its plant in Gardner, Mass., in 1979. The South Beach Furniture Co. acquired the rights to the name in 1992 and today reproduces its wooden furniture.

Mid-Century furniture fans clamor for the look and quality of the vintage Heywood-Wakefield line. Your desk and chair are made of maple and look to be in great shape even after all these years. At auction, we have seen a desk and chair like yours sell for between $250-$1,000+.

Heywood Brothers Table
