Andirons get tarnished and covered with resin from smoke, so they should be cleaned with liquid metal polish and 0000-grade steel wool.
Always use a metal polish on the metal it was made for. Don’t clean silver with pewter or chrome polish. The wrong formulation may scratch the metal.
Never use metal polish to clean ormolu or gilded metal parts. Polish will remove the top layer of color. Use ammonia.
