Shaken AND stirred. That is the reaction of collectors to the winning auction price for Robert McGinnis’ original 1965 movie poster art for James Bond’s Thunderball—an astounding $275,000 at Heritage Auctions. The 11 7/8-by-18 5/8-inch gouache on board illustration features Sean Connery in his fourth James Bond movie and depicts a famous scene in the movie, with wetsuit-clad James Bond gripping a spear gun while surrounded by four beautiful, scantily clad women. This movie was Connery’s most successful Bond film in the series, and it was remade in 1983 as Never Say Never Again with Connery returning to the role after 12 years. Movie posters, and especially original poster art, from the 1960s are popular with collectors because of their “mod” colors and the counterculture embracing of social taboos like sex and violence.
