Carved Rocking Chair

Q: I have an antique rocking chair and would like an estimate of its worth. It’s made of dark wood and has some ornate animals carved on the top. I can’t tell what they are. The seat and back have been reupholstered. It’s in very good condition. Can you tell me what to price it for sale?

A: From your photos, the rocking chair looks like late Victorian era furniture. Carvings of shells, flowers, and animals were popular features of carved furniture of this time period. The carvings look like griffons—a winged mythological creature that’s part lion and part bird. Victorian chairs were often carved from mahogany, which could increase their value. Carved rocking chairs similar to yours have recently sold for $75-$400. Reproductions have been made and sell for less.
