Q: We inherited this lamp from my 92-year-old father-in-law and it may have belonged to his mother. It is a very heavy lamp with a metal base and glass and metal shade. The only markings on the bottom of the base are “EM & Co.” and the number 1132. Any information about the age and value of the lamp would be appreciated.

A: Your lamp was made by Edward Miller & Co. of Meriden, Connecticut. Edward Miller began making camphene and fluid lamps in about 1844. He founded Edward Miller & Co. in 1866. He died in 1909, but the company continued in business. Edward Miller & Co. made various kinds of lamps over the years, including kerosene lamps, gas lighting fixtures, electric lamps, and fluorescent lights. Your lamp was probably made about 1910-1930.
