The $83 million dollar Chinese vase (Kovels Komments, Nov 17, 2010) may not be worth that much after all. The winning phone bid, said to be by a Chinese industrialist, was never paid and may have been part of a Chinese government plot. The London Sun newspaper says it may have been an effort by the Chinese to protest the sale of looted historical treasures. The owners of the inherited vase are now facing a fight with the tax man who charged them inheritance tax of about $19.4 million. Looks like lawyers will get into this tangle.
