Memorial Day History is Rooted in Post-Civil War Years

The first formal declaration for a day for Americans to honor the memories of soldiers who lost their lives in war came in 1868. Early postcards depicting scenes like Civil War remembrances, visits to gravesites, and symbols of freedom were produced to commemorate the day.
