Pressed glass was designed to make the best possible use of the new technique of shaping glass. Early pressed glass pieces were quite heavy and had many bubbles and imperfections. Lacy pressed glass was an early attempt to camouflage these blemishes. The surface of the finished item was impressed with an intricate dotted background, called stippling.
