The artistic black and white photograph became important about 1940. In the second half of the twentieth century, photography became increasingly recognized as an art form. In the 1970s and 1980s, universities and art schools were offering courses in photography. Art museums that would never have considered buying a photo by Nutting started to collect artistic photographs by the most talented photographers.
