American spoons offer several clues to their age. Before 1800 most spoons looked as if they were made from two pieces of silver. The bowl of the spoon was hammered to shape and the handle was soldered to the bowl, or a single piece of silver was cut, hammered, and shaped to look as if it were made of two pieces.
