When loose tea was brewed in the eighteenth century, small bugs, twigs, and other unappetizing items hidden in the leaves floated to the surface. These undesirable bits were strained from the tea with a mote skimmer. The handle of the spoon was small, straight, and pointed. It was used to poke the tea leaves from the inside of the teapot spout.
