Sugar in the eighteenth century was not as refined as ours is today. A large bowl was needed because bulky lumps of sugar were used. Sugar was imported from Cuba about 1724 and was sold in large cone-shaped sugar loaves. The loaf was snipped with sugar nippers, and the pieces were placed in a sugar bowl.
