Q: This old windup alarm clock is in good working order. The writing on the bottom says “The Lux Clock Manufacturing Co., Waterbury, Conn., U.S.A.” When the clock is running, the spinning wheel on the clock face moves. It’s 4 1/4 inches high, 4 inches wide and 1 1/2 inches deep. What is it worth? — J.D., Raleigh, N.C.

A: You have an “animated” alarm clock made in the 1920s or early ’30s. Animated alarm clocks-clocks with some decoration on the face that moves as the hands move-were popular before World War II and are still made today. Lux Clock Manufacturing Co. was founded about 1914 by Paul Lux (1868-1947), a German immigrant who worked for the Waterbury Clock Co. before going out on his own. Lux made all kinds of animated alarm clocks. Yours, in working order, would sell today for about $80.
