The Kovels’ Top Ten list is based on the results of hundreds of thousands of searches that took place on its website during May, 2011. Occupied Japan remains on top, proving Kovels.com is one of the web’s most popular sources for Occupied Japan collectibles prices.

Bottle openers used for bottles with caps like soft drink bottles, are an interest new to the Kovels’ Top Ten list. The first crown bottle cap was patented in 1892 and there are many types of bottle openers dating from that time. Collectors prize iron advertising and comic openers. Bottle openers are often auctioned in lots, sometimes themed according to material or design or subject. Prices for most are $20 to $100.

Pictured here are two bottle openers from a lot of five, all cast iron, that sold recently at a Morphy auction. The lot of five sold for $120; the other openers included were a boy with an alligator, a foundry worker, and another fish. Try to find the “hook” that actually opens the bottle.
