Our reader, @Anne Lemay has a descriptive answer to this week’s “whatsit.” “Hat pin holder – women around the turn of the 20th century wore large hats that were secured by extra long straight pins with decorative tips. This holder kept the pins handy, safe, and visible. Perhaps rings were left in the little tray around the bottom? I’ve never seen one with that design.”

I think it is a hat pin holder. I have 2 of these filled with hat pins…..I will be watching to see what everyone has to say. I am interested in the value, mine are about the same….a pinker color with flowers.

I had an antique Hat Pin Holder full of antique pins just like this with different coloring. I gave it to my daughter when she was in her early twenties (she is 49) and she gave it to someone in the family. Thanks for the showing!!

Cannot see the top perfectly but I think it looks like a flower frog due to the holes on the top. I win! LOL
This makes me think of an incense burner. The joss sticks could fit in the holes, and the ashes would drop down into the dish.
